Increase of the Spanish SMI will benefit more than 2 million workers

This Wednesday the Government of Spain together with two of the nation's trade union organizations, the General Union of Workers and the Workers' Commissions, decided to establish the minimum interprofessional salary (SMI) at 1,000 euros gross per month.

Increase of the Spanish SMI will benefit more than 2 million workers. This amount will be distributed in 14 payments and it is equivalent to 1,140 dollars, which represents an increase of 35 euros over the SMI of 965 euros, which is currently established.

This measure will benefit approximately two million workers throughout the country. This was reported by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, this benefit will especially help young people between the ages of 16 and 24, who mostly work full days.

One of the specifications of this agreement is that it will have retroactive effects from January 1 of this year, that is, any permanent worker must end the year 2022 with a total salary of 14.00 euros, which can be distributed in 12 payments and two extraordinary.

For its part, it was established that temporary or seasonal workers will receive 47.36 euros per day, while service or home employees will receive 7.82 euros per hour.

Minimum wages in other European countries

Luxembourg is located in the EU country with the best minimum wage, this being 2,256.95 euros (approximately US$2,577).

While Bulgaria is the European country with the lowest minimum wage (332.34 euros gross per month). According to data provided by Eurostat, the European Statistical Office.

Spain, meanwhile, is in seventh place in terms of the best minimum wages in Europe.

But, Eurostat did not take into account for these statistics that the SMI agreements are reflected in 14 payments, thus dividing the gross amount in 12 months. Therefore, it is confirmed that the Spanish SMI is 3.5 times higher than the lowest in the entire European Union.
