50 migrants die in an abandoned truck in Texas
16 people were transferred to hospitals in San Antonio, 250 kilometers from the border
The bodies of the 50 dead migrants were found Monday afternoon in a truck trailer that had been abandoned in southwest San Antonio.
The finding, which has been considered one of the most heinous tragedies of migrants, was confirmed by local authorities.
In a speech, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed on Tuesday that “at least 22 people were Mexicans.”
The truck was found in a low-traffic area, located near a train track in southwest San Antonio, about 165 miles from the US-Mexico border.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the truck was found by a worker in one of the buildings, “a worker in one of the buildings back here heard a cry for help. He went out to investigate, found a trailer with the doors ajar, opened them to look and found several deceased people inside," the police authority said at its press conference.
Among the deceased there are 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans.
McManus, reported that the investigation will remain in the hands of federal agents, which will indicate the lines to follow.
The chief of the San Antonio Fire Department, Charles Hood, mentioned that the people died from exhaustion and excess heat inside the truck, since there was no air conditioning.
On the other hand, Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, referred to human trafficking as “monstrous individuals”, who can exploit the most vulnerable; for which he also added that work will be done so that those responsible for such an act are brought before the law.
